Pedestrian control signals, standards revised.
ENTITLED, An Act to
revise certain provisions regarding pedestrian control signals.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:
Section
1.
That
§
32-28-9.1
be amended to read as follows:
32-28-9.1.
Whenever special pedestrian control signals exhibiting the words, walk or don't
walk, or exhibiting a lighted
white or red
international pedestrian
walk or don't walk
symbol are
in place
such
the
signals
shall indicate as follows
indicate the following
:
(1)
Walk or a lighted
white
international pedestrian
walk
symbol.--Pedestrians facing
such
the
signal may proceed across the roadway in the direction of the signal and shall be
given the right-of-way by the drivers of all vehicles;
(2)
Don't walk or a lighted
red
international pedestrian
don't walk
symbol.--No pedestrian
may start to cross the roadway in the direction of
such
the
signal, but any pedestrian
who has partially completed
his
crossing on the walk signal shall proceed to a sidewalk
or safety island while the don't walk signal or lighted
red
international pedestrian
don't
walk
symbol is showing.
The special pedestrian control signals shall conform to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices, 2003 Edition.
A violation of this section by a driver is a Class 2 misdemeanor. A violation of this section by
a pedestrian is a petty offense.
