        A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, Honoring the memory of Milo Smith.

    WHEREAS, Milo Smith cheerfully served as an Assistant Sergeant at Arms for the Senate from 1995 through 2000 and an Assistant Sergeant at Arms for the House of Representatives from 2001 through 2009. He treasured his friendships with legislators and pages and always had an American flag lapel pin in his pocket to hand to any legislator; and

    WHEREAS, Milo Smith served in the South Dakota Army National Guard, including active duty in Alaska during the Korean War. He continued his service to the people of South Dakota as Commissioner of Motor Vehicles under Governor Archie Gubbrud; and

    WHEREAS, Milo Smith was an enthusiastic fan, participant, and sponsor of athletics, particularly baseball. He played Legion and men's amateur baseball in Pierre and was on the semipro Pierre Cowboys Basin League team. He also sponsored and managed amateur baseball teams in Pierre during the 1970s and 1980s; and

    WHEREAS, Milo Smith was a native of Pierre, South Dakota, and a businessman who shared his love of athletics with many generations who patronized his sporting goods and athletic equipment businesses. He was an avid supporter of Pierre and the surrounding communities, serving on several boards and committees dedicated to improving the area. For decades, he and his wife Peggy supported the VFW and their weekly Friday night events. They instilled pride in their community and country in their three sons and their families:

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Eighty-Eighth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that family and friends of Milo Smith and fellow citizens be assured of the Legislature's deep respect for and appreciation of the late Milo Smith.
