        A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, Honoring Daniel Schmidtman as a recipient of the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

    WHEREAS, Daniel Schmidtman, a respected resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and a student at Washington High School, has received national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by receiving a 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Award along with a one thousand dollar scholarship and a trip to Washington D.C.; and

    WHEREAS, this prestigious award honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

    WHEREAS, Mr. Schmidtman earned this award by giving generously of his time and energy to found a hunger-focused student volunteer organization that includes more than one hundred seventy-five members. This organization participates in volunteer projects such as hunger walkathons, feeding the homeless, and stuffing backpacks for shipment to third-world countries. Mr. Schmidtman has also contributed to his community by producing public safety radio commercials and also as a volunteer church school teacher; and

    WHEREAS, the strength and vitality of our communities, our state, and our society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Mr. Schmidtman who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others:

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Eighty-Eighth Legislature of the State

of South Dakota, that this legislative body hereby congratulates and honors Mr. Schmidtman as a recipient of a Prudential Spirit of Community Award, recognizes his outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit, and extends best wishes for his continued success and happiness.
