A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, Honoring Bethold (Bert) Fried on his 90th birthday.
WHEREAS, Bethold (Bert) Fried was born on his family farm near White Butte, South
Dakota on January 15, 1923, to Christ and Emelia Fried, grew up near Bison, South Dakota,
married Mildred Reitdorf on June 18, 1950, and spent most of his life farming near Meadow,
South Dakota; and
WHEREAS, Bert is the recipient of the Silver Star from his service in World War II. Bert
served in Company A, 14
th Tank Battalion, the first tank company to cross the Bridge at
Remegen on March 7, 1945, after Germany's failed attempt to destroy the bridge; and
WHEREAS, Bert retired in 1996 and moved to Sturgis, South Dakota where he and Mildred
continue to participate in the Sturgis Senior Center and the First Presbyterian Church in
Whitewood, South Dakota. Bert and Mildred have 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Eighty-Eighth Legislature of the
State of South Dakota, that Bert will be honored on January 12, 2013, at an open house
celebrating his 90
th birthday.
