A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION, Opining that the star quilt should be recognized as the official quilt of this state.
WHEREAS, the giving of buffalo hides and robes was a tradition among many tribes as an act of love, peace, and respect, and that the giving of a Star Quilt now represents one of the greatest honors among the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes; and
WHEREAS, the star quilt pattern is made of material cut into diamond shapes that are pieced together into eight sections that create an eight-pointed star inspired by the Morning Star; and
WHEREAS, Star quilts are one of the most valued and honored gifts of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes, and used for school banners, placed on sweat lodges, and given to honor weddings, childbirths, passing of loved ones, and other landmark occasions:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Ninety-Seventh Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the star quilt should be recognized as the official quilt of this state.
