South Dakota Livestock Brand Board
Mr. Bob Gadd, Director, South Dakota Livestock Brand Board, presented background information on the
Board. He stated there are 28,423 brands registered in South Dakota, of which approximately 10,000 are
active. Mr. Gadd noted the Board receives approximately 100 applications per month. Some brands are
renewed although there are no cattle under the brand. The Board no longer issues split brands. There are
about 30 new brands issued per month out of the 100 applications. The brand books are published every 5
years.
In response to Representatives Putnam's question, Mr. Gadd explained freeze brands are permitted on horses
but are not recognized as proof of ownership on cattle. Mr. Gadd distinguished between livestock
investigators and inspectors. He noted the Board has submitted legislation to raise the cap on the fee for brand
renewals from $5.00/year to $10.00/year. The Board does not receive reimbursement from fines collected
for stolen livestock. The Board does receive $36,000/year from brand inspections. Mr. Gadd indicated the
Board also has submitted legislation to raise the cap on the fee charged for brand inspections.
