     HB 1108:   FOR AN ACT ENTITLED, An Act   to revise the supervision requirements of certified registered nurse anesthetists by physicians.

     On page 2 , after line 3 of the printed bill , insert:

"      Section 2. That chapter 36-9 be amended by adding thereto a NEW SECTION to read as follows:

     In any practice setting permitted by this chapter, where coverage by a physician licensed pursuant to chapter 36-4 who is an anesthesiologist is available, the certified registered nurse

anesthetist performs duties and functions under the supervision of a physician licensed pursuant to chapter 36-4 who is an anesthesiologist.

     Section 3. That chapter 36-9 be amended by adding thereto a NEW SECTION to read as follows:

     In any practice setting permitted by this chapter, where coverage by a physician licensed pursuant to chapter 36-4 who is an anesthesiologist is not available, the certified registered nurse anesthetist performs duties and functions in an interdependent role as a member of a physician- directed health care team, subject to quality review under the joint supervision of the South Dakota Board of Nursing and the State Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. The quality review shall consist of a yearly review of the greater of five percent or thirty cases of the reviewed certified registered nurse anesthetist conducted retrospectively with a preestablished written protocol agreed upon between the joint boards designed to assure quality and appropriateness of services rendered. "
