     WHEREAS,  the Siemens Foundation of New Jersey selected Jeff Berndt as the Advanced Placement Teacher of the Year in South Dakota, sharing the honor with one teacher from each of the other forty-nine states; and

     WHEREAS,  Jeff Berndt, physics teacher, has been teaching at Sioux Falls Washington High School for ten years where his students have achieved an eighty percent pass rate on the advanced placement test; and

     WHEREAS,  Jeff Berndt has dedicated his time and effort to his students by setting his expectations high, demanding the most effort, urging them to put effort into everything they do, and treating them like family:

         A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION,  Congratulating the town of Canova on the 125th anniversary celebration of its founding.

     WHEREAS,  the town of Canova was built on the pillars of religious faith, farming, a community tradition of baseball, education of its people, and recognition of those who served; and

     WHEREAS,  the religious denominations of the Canova community have worked together for a common faith in God and fellow man; and

     WHEREAS,  the economy of the Canova community has centered around farming and protection of the land; and

     WHEREAS,  Canova's baseball tradition boasts eight state titles, eleven runner-up finishes, and the Canova Gang's all-time State Amateur Baseball Tournament record for most wins of seventy-three; and

     WHEREAS,  the closing of the school brought the birth of the Canova Alumni and Recreation Establishment promoting the health of the community; and

     WHEREAS,  American Legion Post 61 has recognized those who have served our country and those who gave their lives; and

     WHEREAS,  Dora Brugier, a community leader and member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, will turn ninety years old on April 15, 2008, and deserves recognition and praise for her wonderful storytelling, kindness, and deep concern for people in need; and

     WHEREAS,  Dora Brugier has served as a deacon of St. John's Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte, from where she continues to share blessings and prayers with all persons in need in any way she can; and

     WHEREAS,  Dora Brugier is a fluent Lakota speaker who overcame poverty and adversity and has always cheerfully shared her deep knowledge of Lakota lifeways and Lakota language with storytelling and teaching of positive Lakota virtues to children and all others willing to listen:

     WHEREAS,  Sue Horstmeyer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Disorders at Northern State University in 1973 and her Master of Arts degree in Communication Disorders at the University of South Dakota in 1974; and

     WHEREAS,  Sue Horstmeyer has taught at a number of schools in South Dakota including Springfield, Avon, Tabor, Baltic, Tri-Valley, Garretson, and Dell Rapids and was also the coordinator of a new program that brought speech therapy to many South Dakota schools; and

     WHEREAS,  Sue Horstmeyer has been involved with multiple school-related activities including serving as a Christmas for our Kids volunteer for eighteen years; serving as a former member of the Dell Rapids Lions Club; serving as a present member of the Dell Rapids Legion Auxiliary; and providing speech therapy through home visits with the Birth-to-3 Program from 2001-2007. She has received a number of awards throughout her career including the 2004

Tradition for Caring Jefferson Award; the 2007 Peer Award at the Dell Rapids Elementary School; and the Twenty Years of Dedicated Service Award at the Dell Rapids Elementary School for serving from 1987-2007.

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED,  by the Eighty-Third Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that Sue Horstmeyer be honored for her many years of devoted service to the state of South Dakota and its education system.

     WHEREAS,  Sarah Thvedt earned this award by giving generously of her time and energy to the impoverished people of Lima, Peru, by helping supply food and water, distributing clothing, providing religious education, and bathing children; and

     WHEREAS,  the success of the State of South Dakota, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Sarah Thvedt who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others:

         A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION,  Congratulating the town of Artesian on the 125th anniversary of its founding.

     WHEREAS,  the town of Artesian derived its name from the flow of artesian wells after originally being named Diana in honor of the wife of one of the original settlers; and

     WHEREAS,  the town was platted by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad to serve as the dynamo of economic growth in eastern Sanborn County; and

     WHEREAS,  the pillars of strong faith, unselfish service to fellow man, agricultural economy, and community spirit for the common good built and maintain the rich tradition of Artesian over the past 125 years:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED,  by the Eighty-Third Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that the town of Artesian be honored on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of its founding that will be celebrated on July 4, 5, and 6, 2008.

         A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION,  Commending and honoring Casimir Ziolkowski for pushing forward with his father's dream of the Crazy Horse Memorial.

     WHEREAS,  this year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the June 3, 1948, dedication of the educational, cultural, and humanitarian project known as the Crazy Horse Memorial; and

     WHEREAS,  Casimir Ziolkowski handles the construction of the mountain. You can find him running a bulldozer across narrow granite ledges or blasting through the granite with dynamite; and

     WHEREAS,  the work and the dedication of Casimir Ziolkowski is the real inspiration that keeps the carving going. Casimir's father, Korczak Ziolkowski, took on this enormous project, knowing it would likely extend beyond his lifetime, and his son is carrying on his father's work with the same zeal:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED,  by the Eighty-Third Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that Casimir Ziolkowksi be commended and honored for his outstanding commitment to pursuing his father's dream for the Crazy Horse Memorial.

     Rep. Pederson moved that the House do now adjourn, which motion prevailed and at 2:42 p.m. the House adjourned.
