         A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION,  Honoring Marletta Pacheco for her efforts as the founder of the South Dakota Prisoner Support Group.

     WHEREAS,  Marletta Pacheco, a native of Rapid City and a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, has devoted countless hours and tremendous personal effort to improve the lives of persons of all racial and ethnic groups who are incarcerated in the South Dakota corrections system; and

     WHEREAS,  following the death of her nephew while he was an inmate in the South Dakota State Penitentiary, Marletta Pacheco founded the South Dakota Prisoner Support Group and has worked tirelessly on behalf of inmates and their families to improve conditions while they are incarcerated and to ease their transition back into society following their release. The Prisoner Support Group offers referrals, links, websites, information, and news, as well as sharing experiences and problems related to incarcerated family members and friends; and

     WHEREAS,  in addition to her work with the South Dakota Prisoner Support Group and other organizations, Marletta Pacheco served as a member of Governor Rounds' Corrections Work Group in 2004 and has participated in many meetings of the Legislature's State-Tribal Relations Committee, making valuable contributions to the committee's efforts:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,  by the House of Representatives of the Eighty- Third Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the Legislature honors Marletta Pacheco of Rapid City for her dedication and tireless efforts on behalf of individuals in South Dakota's corrections institutions and their families.

         A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION,  Expressing appreciation to the groups and agencies associated with the observance of Native American Day at the Capitol.

     WHEREAS,  the eighth annual observance of Native American Day at the Capitol was held in the Capitol rotunda in Pierre on January 23, 2008. Each year Native American Day at the Capitol is celebrated to honor the commitment to improve relations between lawmakers and state officials and the state's nine reservations; and

     WHEREAS,  Native American Day at the Capitol includes participation by numerous tribal groups and organizations, along with cultural presentations and ceremonies. Native American Day ceremonies feature honor guards, color guards, performances by drum groups, and other presentations, along with information booths provided by various groups and organizations to provide the opportunity for increased interaction between the tribes, state government, and the public; and

     WHEREAS,  Native American Day at the Capitol would not be possible without the cooperation of many groups and organizations in and out of state government, including the Governor's Office, the Office of Tribal Government Relations, the Unified Judicial System, the Bureau of Administration, the Office of Buildings and Grounds, and other agencies in the Capitol, as well as the efforts of the numerous Native American individuals and organizations that organize and coordinate this special day:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED,  by the Eighty-Third Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that the Legislature expresses its thanks and appreciation to all groups and agencies who made the eighth annual observance of Native American Day at the Capitol possible, and the Legislature urges the continuation of this tradition in future years.

         A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION,  Commending and honoring Orland Geigle of the Pollock Board of Education on his selection as the 2007-2008 Associated School Boards of South Dakota Outstanding School Board Member.

     WHEREAS,  Orland Geigle is in his twenty-fifth year as a member of the Pollock Board of Education and he is currently serving his twenty-third year as board president; and

     WHEREAS,  Orland Geigle has served for sixteen years on the Associated School Boards of South Dakota Board of Directors and has served four years on the Associated School Boards of South Dakota Executive Committee, and served as second vice president, vice president, and president of Associated School Boards of South Dakota, and has served in a number of leadership positions in his community, church, and region of the state; and

     WHEREAS,  Orland Geigle believes that all children can learn, has excellent communication skills, and has been a moderating influence as the Pollock school community considers the reorganization of the Pollock School District; and

     WHEREAS,  Orland Geigle has shown visionary educational leadership at both the state and local levels:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED,  by the Eighty-Third Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that Orland Geigle of Pollock, South Dakota, be congratulated on his selection as the 2007-2008 Associated School Boards of South Dakota Outstanding School Board Member and be commended for his continuing efforts to improve the educational opportunities available to the children of our state.
