AMENDMENT 196C FOR THE SENATE EDUCATION ENGROSSED BILL

An Act to incorporate the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings in public school curriculum the state content standards.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:

Section 1. That § 13-1-51 be AMENDED:

13-1-51. The Board of Education Standards may shall promulgate rules, pursuant to chapter 1-26, to provide for curriculum and coursework in South Dakota American Indian history and culture that incorporates At the time that the South Dakota Board of Education Standards undertakes a revision of a set of standards adopted pursuant to § 13-3-48, the board must incorporate the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and provides into the standards, to provide an opportunity for all elementary and secondary students to focus on learn about the history, language, culture, and heritage of the nine Indian tribes in this state.

In meeting the requirements of this section, To ensure the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings are accurately incorporated into the standards, the board shall must consult with the South Dakota Indian Education Advisory Council and the director of the education department of each of the nine federally recognized Indian tribes located wholly or partially within this state.
