FOR THE INTRODUCED

An Act to
require that a
school curriculum include human growth and development within the
health
science
curriculum.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:
Section 1. That a NEW SECTION be added to chapter 13-33:
The
board of each school district shall ensure that the
health
science
curriculum offered to students,
beginning in grade three
in grades six, seven, or eight,
incorporates, by means of oral, written, or digital lessons, or by
means of lectures or presentations, information about human biology
as it relates to pregnancy and human development inside the womb. The
information must include:
(1) A
a
high-definition
ultrasound,
medically accurate
video that has a duration of at least three minutes,
and
that
shows
the
each stage of
fetal development of the brain, heart,
sex organs,
and other vital organs;
and
(2) A
video that shows the process of fertilization and each stage of human
development in the uterus, including cell growth and organ
development
until the time of birth.
The board of a school district may consider using the "Meet Baby Olivia" video produced by a nonprofit organization to meet the requirements of this section.
