An Act to create a share the road specialty license plate.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:
Section 1. That a NEW SECTION be added to chapter 32-5:
An owner of a motor vehicle who is a resident of this state and in compliance with the laws of this state regarding motor vehicle registration may receive share the road specialty plates. The specialty plates may be issued only upon proof of payment of the current registration fees. Share the road specialty plates may be used on automobiles, pickup trucks, or vans, licensed pursuant to § 32-5-6; motorcycles licensed pursuant to § 32-5-9; and noncommercial motor vehicles licensed pursuant to § 32-5-6.3.
Section 2. That a NEW SECTION be added to chapter 32-5:
The share the road specialty plates must feature a design by the Department of Revenue working in cooperation with the Department of Transportation to promote awareness and safety for bicyclists. The design must be approved by the secretary of the Department of Revenue. The special plates are in lieu of the regular number plates issued for the motor vehicle and must be displayed in accordance with § 32-5-98. Annual renewal of share the road specialty plates must be in accordance with the provisions of this chapter.
Section 3. That a NEW SECTION be added to chapter 32-5:
If a share the road specialty plate is lost, mutilated, or destroyed, the owner of the registered vehicle, upon paying a fee of ten dollars to the Revenue Department, may obtain a duplicate set of plates upon filing an affidavit showing the fact that the license plate was lost, mutilated, or destroyed. The fee shall be credited to the license plate special revenue fund.
Section 4. That a NEW SECTION be added to chapter 32-5:
An administrative fee of ten dollars must be charged for share the road specialty plates. The fee must be deposited in the license plate special revenue fund.
