         A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION,  Encouraging all school districts in South Dakota to adopt the Standards for Food and Beverages as outlined in the South Dakota Department of Education Model Wellness Policy.

     WHEREAS,  the South Dakota State Plan for Nutrition and Physical Activity states that thirty-three percent of South Dakota students are overweight or at risk for being overweight; and

     WHEREAS,  similar numbers are reported by South Dakota data for preschool age children; and

     WHEREAS,  the sale of high-sugar content beverages and foods with poor or no nutritional content in schools can contribute to poor nutrition in school age children; and

     WHEREAS,  the consumption of high-sugar content beverages in the United States, which are associated with the current epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes, has increased by five hundred percent over the past fifty years; and

     WHEREAS,  the ingredients in soft drinks contribute to reduced calcium absorption, which contributes to osteoporosis, and can also cause dental cavities and erosion on teeth; and

     WHEREAS,  all foods and beverages made available on school campuses should offer children nutritious choices; and

     WHEREAS,  the Honorable Governor M. Michael Rounds has made improving the health of all South Dakotans a priority with his Healthy South Dakota Initiative:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,  by the Senate of the Eighty-second Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that all school

districts in South Dakota be encouraged to adopt the Standards for Food and Beverages as outlined in the South Dakota Department of Education Model Wellness Policy.
