DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REPORT (continued from the previous meeting)_Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth appeared before the Committee to report on the remaining 2010 Initiatives for that Department. Committee members referred to Handout D from the January 13, 2006 meeting. Tom Martinec, director of the Division of Health Systems Development and Regulation, reported on the accomplishments made in strengthening the health care delivery system in South Dakota and answered questions of committee members. Jerry Hofer, director of the Division of Administration, reported on the advance responses made to the emerging public health threats in SD and answered questions.

Dr. Lon Kightlinger, state epidemiologist, provided information and answered questions regarding the Legionnaires' outbreak in South Dakota. He also reported on the Avian influenza virus and the influenza pandemic phases.

Secretary Hollingsworth distributed a card "South Dakota Department of Health at a Glance in 2004" (Handout A), which listed vital statistics for that Department.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES_Secretary Deb Bowman introduced Department Division Directors: Brenda Tidball-Zeltinger, Management Services; Sharon Sonnenschein, Economic Assistance; Larry Iversen, Medical Services; Virgena Wieseler, Child Protection Services; Kim Malsam-Rysdon, deputy secretary; Ann Holzhauser, acting director, Legal Services; Gail Ferris, Adult Services & Aging; Pat Monson, Child Care Services; Mark Close, Operations and Technology; and Terry Walter, Child Support Services. Secretary Bowman distributed a pamphlet entitled, "Department of Social Services, Strong Families-South Dakota's Foundation & Our Future" (Handout B). She gave an overview of the information provided in the handout. Mrs. Bowman also distributed information on the "Department of Social Services FY 2007 Recommended Budget, July 1, 2006 - June 30, 2007" (Handout C). Larry Iversen and Virgena Wieseler also answered questions of committee members.
